When it came to sentencing, Nakagawa was only given eight years in Sugamo Prison in 1949. Perhaps reflecting a belief in Japan at the time that their military and naval officers were being unduly punished for what they perceived to have been ‘legal’ acts of war, just four years later the Japanese government released Nakagawa when the Allied powers withdrew from the occupation of Japan. Four years was a very light punishment considering the dozens of men he had ordered killed in the Indian Ocean and for whose murder he bore the responsibility as commanding officer of the I- 37. No other members of the I-37’s crew were ever prosecuted over the attacks on the British Chivalry, Sutlej and Ascot.
